Did some template re-working thanks to my tech support friend Adam. We are now centered. Bask in the symmetrical-ness. It’s a word now, shuddap. I’ve also got my model release form now downloadable from the “legal” page.
I’ve now got a lovely watermark/logo from Funky Peach Designs! If you need some logo work done, look no further. Super fast, inexpensive, awesome.
Awesome, right?
I also went for my portfolio review on Thursday. I came into UMASS a Liberal Arts major and upon realizing I didn’t want to be any of the things such a major lends itself to, started the transition process into their Photography program. I needed to submit 12 images and a few drawings (groan).
Well…it went great!! Not only did I “pass with flying colors”, I got some great feedback on my portfolio from the art foundations director…who is super cool.
And I might just have a cool job in the works…but I’m not sure yet…keep your fingers crossed for me!
That’s all for now, enjoy some pictures of my son testing out his activity saucer:

This week’s cool links!
Posted in: Links
Ok, so it’s been a little over a week but I totally told you that would happen.
- Get 10 free splatter brushes from PSDTUTS here.
- Pixadus is a cool site for inspiration, it posts popular photos from around the internet all day everyday. Check it out if you need a little inspiration in your day.
- Beyond Megapixels posted about keeping a photography journal here to help you improve your photography, prevent forgetfulness, and record information. The author prints small versions of certain pictures with notes, records locations he saw when he didn’t have a camera, and sketches out lighting schematics from photos he likes. GENIUS. I’ll be getting one tomorrow.
- Here’s a Lightroom video tutorial on removing things from your images.
- Digital Photography School’s Halloween Photography tips are here, just in time for your ghoulish festivites.
- Follow that with Photojojo’s guide to carved pumpkin photography here.
- Natalie Norton talks to DPS about how she achieves natural, cadid-quality portraits here.
- Great info on newborn and maternity shoots.

Sheep!
Posted in: Animals/Nature
A few photos from New York Sheep and Wool this past weekend. (For those coming here from points other than my knitting blog, I am a fiber arts fanatic.) There were oodles of sheep, alpaca, goats and llamas and I happily snapped away on day two in an effort to prevent any further purchases of what was recently shorn from their bodies. It mostly worked.

Maternity Session: Katie
Posted in: Portraits
Upon begging my friends via MySpace to model for me, I received an email from my knocked up buddy Katie. She and her “Green Bean” came down to the ‘Riv today for a quick shoot before she heads back home to the boonies.
It was high, harsh sun and naturally not a cloud in the sky. I did the best I could and rode my light meter through the whole shoot. I swindled Jacky (another friend who’s modeled after my myspace begging) into working my reflector disk to fill in the shadows. She did a great job.
Here are my favorites.

I plan to do this every week (let’s see how long before I forget a week!).

Love cool Photoshop actions? Want a gaggle of free ones at your fingertips? Browse DeviantArt’s huge selection of user-made free PS actions. I literally spent an hour going through and downloading! I love actions not just for their effect but the way they inadvertently show you how to get certain effects in Photoshop. Check em out!
Ever wish your photographic pet peevs came in comic form? They do. My favorite is the first one. I hear “wow, your camera takes great pictures” all the time. It’s not the camera, jerk.
Tis the season, Beyond Megapixels has a quick article on getting great shots of autumn leaves.
Thinking of selling stock photography? Going pro? Advertising? You’ll need a model release form! There are great, downloadable & customizable examples here.

One studio: Unpacked.
Posted in: Childhood, Portraits, Studio
My “studio” arrived last week via a mangled UPS box (thanks for abiding by the “fragile” note on the box, guys) and I tore right into it…just in time to go class. So days later I had my “craft room” deconstructed and by way of my excellent Tetris skills I managed to make just enough room for my backdrop support, my tripod and myself.
To my dismay on of my lightbulbs did not illuminate when I asked it to so I was stuck with one light for now. I called the darling daughter in an attempted to take a few quick shots of her before the ants in her pants went to town. That took about 4 and a half seconds. I managed to get one decent, semi-craptastic shot before it was time for dinner and all hope of a calm 8 year old was abandoned.
Ignore the wrinkles in the backdrop, my sister in law was holding my iron hostage.
Dinner was ready so I couldn’t fiddle anymore. Later I got some more time with a very happy baby of mine and got MUCH better results:
Ex: 1/200 – f3.2 – ISO800 – 60mm – No flash, one umbrella light to camera left.
I’m pretty excited to mess around in there some more asap. Unfortunately the above happy baby is currently a stuffy cranky mess (as is his mother) so it might have to wait a few days.

After a long night of hair pulling, vulgarity and exclamations of despair…my photoblog is on it’s way to being ready. I’ve got a lot of filling in to do but it’s all easy from here!
